In recent years, the dating scene has undergone a dramatic transformation. Using a dating app doesn’t guarantee finding a partner and individuals are often judged on various criteria. Dating can sometimes feel like job hunting with rejections causing emotional distress and potentially having long-lasting effects. However, instead of feeling heartbroken or angry, one can learn to manage rejections in a way that builds confidence.
In a recent Reddit post, a user shared a valuable life hack for young men, encouraging them to use dating apps as a tool to learn an essential life lesson about handling rejection and failure for personal growth.
The user explained, “Life hack for all young guys here. Use online dating apps. Not for the matches or finding a girlfriend. Dating apps will teach you very important life lesson, how to handle rejections and failure. Many years ago, I (28M) started using dating apps as a naive 21-year-old just out of college, after moving to Bengaluru for my first job. I had no idea what the online dating scene was like, so my expectations were high. The reality hit me very quickly, very hard. I don’t think I got a match for at least a month.”
“I was expecting a match rate of 10-20%. The reality was 0.01% or even less. I tried making up excuses, making adjustments, but nothing changed much. I was so dejected and depressed. I uninstalled the apps, tried again after 3-4 months, only to get the same results. This cycle continued for 2-3 years, but each time I became more okay with my empty likes page,” the Redditor added.
The individual shared that the most important lesson they learned from using dating apps is becoming comfortable with rejection. They noted that breakups happen and new opportunities are always available. Despite the mental stress, they found the real-world impact of these failures to be minimal. They considered this the best kind of failure and rejection one could experience. The Reddit user advised all young men to use online dating apps, experience numerous rejections, feel the sadness, and then learn how to deal with these failures and rejections, as it can prepare them for more serious setbacks later in life.
