Bizarre food combos are not a new concept. The social media users have seen food combinations ranging from maggi biryani to pav bhaji ice-cream to chocolate pizza. Now, a video featuring a street vendor preparing idli ice cream has been making the rounds on the internet. This video highlights another weird fusion of South Indian cuisine with ice cream, where sambhar and chutneys are also used to make this unique ice cream roll.
Food vlogger Sukrit Jain originally shared the video on Instagram. The clip opens to show a food vendor chopping idli into small pieces. As the video goes on, he pours red chutney, coconut chutney, sambhar and some ice cream over the idli. He then mixes all the ingredients well before flattening the mixture on a cold plate. Towards the end, he plates the idli ice cream and garnishes it with half an idli and some chutney (Dip).
Since being shared on January 17, the video has mustered over 12.7 million views. Many even took to the comments section of the video to share their thoughts. Even Sukrit Jain who originally shared the video, wrote, “Swaad bahut thi ye but [But, it was tasty].”

Earlier, in an attempt to impress the food enthusiasts, a restaurant in Bengaluru served idli on an ice cream stick. An X (Formerly Twitter) user took to the micro-blogging platform to share a photo of the weird innovation. In the photo, three idlis on sticks are placed on a plate while another is dipped in a bowl of sambar. There is also the usual coconut chutney placed alongside.

The unusual presentation gained a lot of attention on social media and sparked a debate, with some loving the idea, while some slamming it. However, amidst the innovations, several foodies expressed their discontentment and anger for the restaurant. However, it is not just an Idli getting the makeover, a while ago, the ‘Panipuri ice cream’ amused desis. You read that right. This abomination of a recipe had gone viral on platform X and it had made the people see red.
