Remember the days when style always came at the cost of comfort? From squeezing into corset dresses to tight ponytails, we endured it all for the sake of fashion. High heels, in particular, were a staple despite their discomfort. But times are changing. The younger generations are now prioritising comfort over style. A recent video from a New York nightclub shows a shift in fashion trends: young women at the venue are all sporting a similar look—jeans, a stylish top and comfy sneakers.
According to a TikTok video, Gen Z considers high heels outdated for going out, as reported by the New York Post.
While jeans and tops have been wardrobe staples for quite some years now, sneakers have usually not been a part of one’s club or party wear. However, Gen Zers have put an end to that age-old tradition now and have decided that being comfortable is a far superior option when it comes to dancing and pub hopping.
The global pandemic has influenced our choices in footwear, leading to a significant rise in the sales of flats and low-heeled shoes in recent years, while high-heel sales have declined. Though flats are practical, this shift has also made it easier for younger generations to differentiate from older individuals, according to the NY Post.
However, the comments on the recent viral video have reportedly called for the return of dressing up. “OMG I would have hated this when I was in my 20s. The best part of going out was getting all dolled up,” wrote a viewer. “I remember when we couldn’t enter a nightclub if we had jeans on,” another one commented.
Another viewer said, “Fashion has definitely changed, I’m 35 and when we used to go out clubbing it was mini dresses and the tallest heels going even when it was snowing outside.”
