The year 2023 will be remembered as the year of artificial intelligence (AI). From cutting-edge technology to being all-pervasive, artificial intelligence has grown by leaps and bounds this year. We use it on our phones and operating systems, while large companies have already started integrating it into their daily operations.
Here is a look at some of the most significant developments in artificial intelligence in 2023.
AI’s Connection With India:
India offers a plethora of unexplored AI applications in a variety of promising domains, including financial services, healthcare, agriculture, and many more. By 2025, Forbes predicts AI spending in India to approach Rs 9,800 crore, and it is anticipated to generate at least Rs 3,750 crore in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
In June 2023, there were almost 14 times as many people in India with AI skills on their list than there were in 2016. In the country, AI has already been widely adopted in several industries, most notably finance, retail, and education. Meanwhile, the government has also jumped on the AI chatbot bandwagon with projects under the Digital Nagrik programmes, MyGov Helpdesk on WhatsApp, and Umang’s AI chatbot, among other things.
More than 60 startups are currently operating in the country, all vying to provide services and solutions across various industry verticals by utilising the potential of generative AI.
The ChatGPT Year:
Although ChatGPT wasn’t the first of its kind, it will be remembered as the chatbot that popularised artificial intelligence. The Natural Language chatbot developed by OpenAI gradually infiltrated workplaces, impacting output and causing concerns about job security.
Just two months after its launch, in January 2023, the chatbot surpassed 100 million users. It is currently one of the most popular services ever, with 1.7 billion website visits in October 2023, as per reports. The website is thought to have over 100 million active users each week. The website has an astoundingly low 17.33 per cent bounce rate, reports add.
Additionally, Forbes claims that ChatGPT is so well-known that 6 million searches for “chat gpt login” occur on Google each month. The largest audience segments are India (6.32 per cent), Japan (4.01 per cent), and the United States (15.22 per cent).
This year, ChatGPT faced numerous competitors, including Microsoft and Google, who made significant investments in innovative Generative search experiences, as well as Google’s poorly received Bard launch.
Concerns about AI and its Regulation:
The year 2023 revealed both the extent and limitations of our understanding of Generative AI, ranging from text-to-image generators producing unsettling and copyrighted images to AI-generated deepfakes potentially influencing elections.
Reports state that the European Union passed the AI Act, which will go into effect by 2025, and the US White House signed an executive order to improve AI safety. In addition, the Digital India Act will establish safeguards for AI soon.
