Delhi Startup Founder Receives Job Application Written Using ChatGPT: 'Explains Unemployment in India'

A startup founder based in Delhi has been hiring people “left, right and centre” for various roles at her “content-as-a-service” company, Entourage, which she founded in 2023. As the CEO, Ananya Narang shared a screenshot of a job application she received on social media. The job application she received on LinkedIn was clearly generated using AI, as the candidate forgot to replace the placeholders with their relevant skills and experience.

While sharing the screenshot on X (formerly known as Twitter), she wrote, “Just received yet another job application. No wonder we have so much unemployment today.”

Narang also shared the screenshot of the cover letter on LinkedIn, advising job seekers, “Can we please please please use AI ‘not-blindly’?” She pointed out, “I’ve been hiring left, right & centre and texts like these are literally 1 out of 5 applications.”

Though the job application started and ended well, it was the second paragraph that revealed that it was written using AI after the candidate forgot to edit the placeholders.

“I’m proficient in [mention your key skills, e.g., graphic design, social media strategy, research], and I’m passionate about [explain briefly how you can add value, e.g., creating engaging content, analyzing trends, supporting strategic initiatives]. My previous experience includes [briefly highlight relevant experience or projects],” read a part of the cover letter which Narang received on LinkedIn.

Narang replied to her post on X and asked, “Please tell me what do I reply?” An individual then suggested she use ChatGPT.

She did take the X user’s advice and used the AI chatbot to write a response. She shared it on the microblogging platform with the words “That’s what it says”. The reply she generated using ChatGPT read, “Dear [Applicant’s Name], Thank you for your interest in the [Job Title] position at [Company Name]. After reviewing your application, it appears that your submission was an unedited message generated by an AI tool, such as ChatGPT.”
