But is this popular flatbread’s existence under threat? An online user claimed that roomali rotis have become rare on Indian restaurant menus and the internet agrees.

Rumali Roti, known for its handkerchief-like texture, is quite popular in Indian cuisine. It’s thin, silky, and flexible, and it pairs well with anything from kebabs to a flavourful bowl of curry. Taking to his X-handle, the user named Hari caught everyone’s attention when he wrote, “Rumali Roti vanishing from menus is a crisis that isn’t spoken about enough.”

Many others agreed with Hari that this flatbread, which needs to be made with precision, is becoming a lost recipe. A user stated, “I too have thought about this, even though I am not supposed to consume it. Why is it missing in several places? Is it related to popularity or skills? I know it’s not easy to make and flipping and spinning it in the air is an art.”

Another individual narrated an incident they faced recently, “True. Recently I asked at Cafe in Chandigarh for malai chaap and rumali roti and they said, we don’t have rumali roti. Instead they suggested options in Naan.”

Many believe the dominance of other flatbreads is diminishing the popularity of this unique flatbread. A user jokingly said, “It’s a conspiracy by big naan.”

Some also pointed out how many restaurants aren’t even aware of this flatbread. “Yes and yes. I specifically look for it when I want to eat Indian food outside and not many restaurants have it,” said a user, while another commented, “Actually true … missing the rumali rotis from every menu nowadays and when I ask they reply “ Sir yeh Kya hoti hai” … like seriously.”

On the other hand, a person who does not like it said, “Rumali Roti is the cotton candy of rotis. Good thing it’s vanishing. It’s so huge that sometimes it’s confusing how many to order.”
