A man’s life came crashing down recently when he realised that his wife, whom he had been married to for 6 years, is his biological sister. Yes, you heard it right. As per a report published in The Mirror, he came to know this fact while he was trying to save her life by donating one of his kidneys. Reportedly, his wife required a new kidney when she became sick after the delivery of their son. They checked with her relatives and realised that none of them was eligible to become donors. With no other option left, he decided to get himself tested to know whether he fulfilled the criteria to become a donor or not. He was unaware of his biological family as he was part of a closed adoption and was adopted two minutes after his birth. In a closed adoption, the biological parents have no direct contact with the adoptive family.
He told The Mirror, “I knew it would be a long shot so I decided to get tested to see if I could donate. I got a call the other day saying that I was a match. The doctor then said something about wanting to do additional testing due to some information from the HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue test results. I didn’t think much of it and agreed”.
The most shocking moment for the man was when he saw the results of the Human Leukocyte Antigen tissue test. He and his wife had an “abnormally high match percentage” according to the results. The man added that he was shocked and confused. He explained that a parent to a child could have at least a 50 percent match and siblings could have a 0-100 percent match in the HLA results. According to him, this happens because of the method by which DNA information is passed down through generations. It was then he got to know that he and his wife are related to each other via the second case (siblings) as per the HLA results. This man has also shared this story on the social media platform Reddit. Users advised him to not be tense about it since their children are healthy and they don’t have any abnormalities.
