Grief is a complicated feeling that’s sometimes challenging to comprehend. One of the most essential things to remember while coping with sorrow is that it does not progress in a linear manner. Rather, sorrow frequently comes in waves, striking in random or unanticipated ways. Losing a child, either expected or unexpected, can cause unbearable grief. Decades can go by without a healing touch. That’s what happened to this Chinese couple. However, in a heartwarming turn of events, the child and parents were reunited after 37 years apart.

A mother in Weinan, in the northwest Chinese province of Shaanxi, gave birth to a baby boy in 1986. He was the couple’s third son, according to Jiupai News.

When he was a day old, his grandma handed him over to a guy called Zhao to be nurtured with his family.

The decision made by the older lady was unknown to the parents, who had declined to grant their assent.

The couple was then informed by the grandmother that she had made the decision on their behalf because she believed that raising a third child would be too challenging for them given they already had two kids, as per South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The boy’s mother and father, who goes by the name Li, claimed they were only aware that Zhao was from the Shandong area in eastern China.

Following the grandmother’s passing, Li and his wife travelled extensively for thirty years in an attempt to locate their son.

According to a database maintained by the Ministry of Public Security, the couple’s blood samples were discovered in February to match those of a man with the last name Pang who lived in Zaozhuang, Shandong province.

In 2009, blood samples from adoptees seeking their original parents and couples whose children disappeared were gathered by China’s police authorities to create a sizable DNA database, SCMP reports.

Shaanxi police asked Li, his wife, and Pang to donate blood twice before establishing that they are biological parents.

Pang saw his parents in Weinan, the city of his birth, on August 3, with the assistance of the authorities, the news outlet added.

The couple was quoted in the report stating, “Son, dad and mum are sorry for you. How has your life been all these years?” while tightly holding his son’s hands.
