Gratifying tales of animals and their antics often captivate the interest of social media users. From tiger’s majestic leap to cute acts of furry companions and more, the internet is filled with intriguing stuff. Recently, IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared a cheering story of two jumbos from Tamil Nadu. The saga of an enduring friendship struck the right chord with wildlife enthusiasts and environmentalists. In her post, the officer shared two videos of Bhama and Kamatchi, who have been best friends for the past 55 years and this is their story.

“Not many of us know that like humans, elephants too share an endearing bond of friendship. This is a true story of friendship between Bhama (75) and Kamatchi (65), two beautiful elephants at our elephant camp at Theppakadu, Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu who have been best friends for the past 55 years,” Sahu said in her post.

She shared several anecdotes about these buddies in her post. Once, Bhama’s mahout Thiru Gopan, was attacked by a leopard when he took her to forest grazing. “Bhama single-handedly chased the leopard away and saved the life of her mahout. Kamatchi was once attacked by a tusker, and it took years for her wound to heal, but she braved it all,” Sahu added.

Even during their meals at the camp, Bhama and Kamatchi stand next to each other. “They love to eat sugarcane and yes, no one can dare give the sugarcane treat only to one, it has to be always given to both,” the officer wrote. Sahu also appreciated the efforts of camp authorities.

“The camp management too needs a pat on the back for taking such good care of these two along with 27 other elephants including two calves at the camp which is one of the oldest in Asia. Apart from the scientific management practices, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department takes best care possible for these gentle giants with sensitivity and empathy,” Sahu wrote in the post.
