New Delhi: Cupertino, California based tech giant Apple has been pushed down to the third place by ‘China’s Apple’ and another home-grown smartphone maker in the world’s biggest market in the second quarter.
An independent analyst firm, Canalys, notes in its Q2 report that Xiaomi and Huawei have been successfully able to beat the US smartphone maker in the Chinese market.
Xiaomi was the largest smartphone vendor in China with a 15.9 per cent market share in the April-June period, followed by Huawei with 15.7 per cent market share. Apple was followed closely by Samsung and another Chinese firm Vivo.
Analyst Wang Jingwen said that Xiaomi is under immense pressure to retain its top spot in the upcoming quarters.
Canalys found that Apple's iPhone sales surged 85 per cent in Greater China, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, with revenue from the region more than doubling to $13 billion for the latest quarter ended June 27.
Apple chief Tim Cook has expressed his keen interest in the Chinese market. He said during the company’s earnings that China offers ‘incredible’ and ‘unprecedented level of opportunity.’
Huawei’s smartphone shipments surged 39 per cent year-on-year in the first half of this year to 48.2 million as it focussed on mid- to high-end models.
Differentiating the company from the top player Xiaomi, Huawei deputy chairman and currently rotating chief executive officer said that the two companies were pitching to different segments of the Chinese market. The company aims to target Samsung as it seeks to rule as the king of Android smartphones in the country.
