Google has a habit of renaming products and even killing many of them. Recently, Google announced a big AI change for its latest product which got everyone curious about the renaming and why it was done.
We are talking about the Bard rebranded to be called Gemini that will be available on high-end computing systems and mobile devices. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has explained the reason for the name change and why he feels it makes sense.
Pichai was quoted in an interview recently saying, the company felt Gemini was the logical final name to use for its approach in the AI scheme of things where they intend to have a capable and at the same time a safe AI model. “ It really made sense to just evolve it to be Gemini because you are talking directly to the underlying Gemini model when you use it,” Pichai was quoted saying in an interview with CNBC.
He also pointed out that Google plans to keep advancing its AI models under the Gemini moniker that users will be able to experience directly. While Google is still finding its feet in the AI arena, the company has decided to offer a subscription version of its AI model called Gemini Advanced, and also bundled AI features into Google One with its new plan that comes at $19.9 (Rs 1600 approx) per month.
Now, just because Google’s chief has said that Gemini is going to be the name for the future AI models doesn’t mean the company will actually stay true to its promise and we blame that on Google’s track record of backtracking on its word. The company said its online gaming platform Stadia is not shutting down.
It turns out, the service was discontinued by informing its customers about the news in a muted way to avoid major media backlash. Google is heavily involved in AI now, and that has cost thousands of people their jobs at the company as it looks to refocus its growth areas and manage expenses to invest in these divisions.
