Snapchat Now Offers Footsteps To Know Your Location History: Here's How
Snapchat is adding the new location history feature for users based on your travel and places you visited.

Snapchat has quietly rolled out a new feature for all iOS users. Known as ‘Footsteps,’ the feature allows users to track their location history and let them see how much of the world they’ve exploded.

The feature, which was earlier exclusive to Snapchat+ subscribers, uses Snap Map to monitor the users’ travel activity and builds on past memories to map out their journeys. But, there’s a catch — it will only work when Ghost Mode, which hides the user’s location, is turned off.

For first-time users of Snapchat Footsteps, your initial steps will be based on your Memories, meaning your past trips will still count. After this, the app will stop using Memories to update your Footsteps and will begin tracking your journeys based on location data.

The feature allows you to see how many countries you've visited and how much of an area you’ve explored. For example, the app might show that you've covered 40 percent of your hometown. Or, if you travelled to Dubai on holiday, it could indicate that you've explored 5 percent of the city.

Note that these percentages will only be correct if you're an ardent user of the app and often save Snaps, as the Footsteps are based on your saved Memories.

How to activate Snapchat Footsteps

– To activate Footsteps on your device, go to the Snap Map tab and then click on ‘OK’ on the Footsteps pop-up.

– Users can also turn off the feature and clear the Footsteps data by going into the Accounts Action tab under the Settings option.

– Click on the Map tab and Toggle off ‘Save new Footsteps as my location updates on the map’ to turn-off Footsteps.

– To clear your data, click on ‘Clear Footsteps History’.

Snapchat’s new feature resembles Google Maps’ Timeline feature that keeps track of the journeys you've taken and the places you've visited using your Location History.

The feature is reportedly available for Snapchat on iOS version 13.9.0.40.
