Microsoft India has announced that their video calling app - Skype Lite will now support Aadhaar integration. Built specifically for the Indian market, Skype Lite was launched back in February this year at Future Decoded India. Microsoft had let known at the time that the Aadhaar integration within Microsoft’s fastest and smallest app to date will be made available, starting summer 2017.
Through the Aadhaar integration, Skype Lite users can verify each other’s identity online. This is aimed at increasing security while communicating over the app. Skype Lite now allows either party to request for an Aadhaar verification over a video call. Users can click on ‘Verify Aadhaar Identity’ to enter their 12-digit Aadhaar number. This can then be authenticated with an OTP sent to the user via SMS. After validation, users can choose to share pre-selected Aadhaar information with the other user as a confirmation to their identity.
The Aadhaar verification of both the users will be captured as an event within the conversation once the Skype Lite call is over. Skype Lite claims that it does not store any Aadhaar information of the users and just like any other personal information on the app, is securely encrypted. Aadhaar integration in Skype Lite can act as a huge value-add to avoid impersonation fraud. In a business/ government communication, parties on both the ends can be sure of the identity of their counterparts through this feature.
