Google brings back Flipkart to the mobile Web with Chrome-only 'Lite' version
The new mobile site is Chrome-only and is expected to boost Google’s share of new Internet users on mobile devices.

New Delhi: Google and Flipkart have together tried to resurrect the e-commerce giant’s website on mobile.

In April, Flipkart appeared to be shutting its mobile web shop as visitors were met with a full-screen message directing them to download the Flipkart app.

However, together with Google, a new mobile website, Flipkart Lite, for the Chrome browser has been launched that basically aims at bringing together the best of the app and mobile web experience; a move which would help Google to make considerable ad dollars owing to its preference for the mobile web over apps, re/code notes.

The new mobile site is expected to boost Google’s share of new Internet users on mobile devices, especially from its Chrome browsers via Android devices.

Although apps have a clean design and offer offline capabilities, but they also demand frequent updates to stay current, which is tricky because in countries like India where a bulk of people do not own high-end devices which are up to date. Whereas, on the web, all you need to do is hit refresh to be current.

The Flipkart Lite website carries elements borrowed from its app. The site was built using a trio of new tools from the Chrome team that enables easier development of apps for regions with low internet connectivity. The company is also the first Indian startup to use the Chrome tools fully.
