New Delhi: Times of having to stick to a particular browser for their add-ons will soon be passé. Mozilla has introduced a new feature that allows add-ons written for Google’s Chrome or Opera work on Firefox.
However, a user won’t be able to directly install add-ons from the Chrome Web Store because all add-ons will still need to be verified by Mozilla and added through the official Firefox extensions portal.
For developers it would be an easier way to maintain a tool across all major browsers by using the WebExtensions API that will enable interoperability between platforms, Digital Trends reports.
Mozilla’s Kev Needham writes, “In addition, we’ve noticed that many Firefox add-on developers also maintain a Chrome, Safari, or Opera extension with similar functionality. We would like add-on development to be more like Web development: The same code should run in multiple browsers according to behavior set by standards, with comprehensive documentation available from multiple vendors.”
The same feature will be extended to Microsoft’s latest Edge browser once it gets official support for extensions.
Existing add-ons might require tweaking before they are compatible with the new Firefox feature. The new extension API for Firefox is currently available in the developer edition of the browser and will be gradually rolled out to the public.
