Facebook rolls out nostalgia 'On This Day' feature to help you relive moments from the past
'On This Day' nostalgia feature shows your posts from the current date in past years, like photos from exactly one year ago, or status updates from four years ago.

New Delhi: Keen to know what you posted exactly a year back? Wish to relive that moment when your friends made live your engagement ceremony? Or simply want to track your own consumption of the social networking site? Facebook has rolled out a feature to let you do just that.

With its latest experiment to compete with Timehop, Facebook has introduced its own 'On This Day' nostalgia feature that shows your posts from the current date in past years, like photos from exactly one year ago, or status updates from four years ago.

A report on TechCrunch said that the feature will be extended globally over the next few days and will be accessible here , on Facebook's bookmarks menu, search, News Feed stories, or opt-in notifications on iOS, Android, mobile web and desktop.

Timehop, a service that lets you catch up on the best moments from the past, has hit 6 million daily users on mobile. While this service can dig up Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Flickr, Dropbox, iPhoto or your camera roll for past memories, On This Day only sifts through Facebook.

While Facebook has no plans to extract money from this feature directly, it would still drive user engagement and lock-in with Facebook's News Feed where people see ads.

Meanwhile, Timehop CEO Jonathan Wegener said that Facebook's similar feature is a validation that they were doing something worth. He stressed that Timehop's mission is broader than just 'replay your Facebook content.' It's to collect your digital history from everywhere.

To avoid hurting people with posts about deceased loved ones or ex-partners, Facebook's algorithm detects memories based on your past tags. For example if you had tagged someone as your partner but later removed them, the nostalgia feature won't resurface that post. It will also avoid displaying memories of friends who've passed away.

On This Day feature is accessible through the bookmark inthe Facebook web sidebar and the mobile site and app's navigation menu. Upon clicking it, you will be directed to the feed of status updates, photos, and posts you've been tagged in from exactly one, two, or several years ago. You can then choose to share the content with friends.

Users can also subscribe to a daily notification reminding you to check out the On This Day nostalgia feed. Facebook has earlier experimented with a similar Memories feature that offered an yearly summary of user's posts and pictures.
