New Delhi: Emoji is the brand new way of communicating and tend to express more than written word these days. But, it is killing off the good old traditional Internet slang.
Instagram, the photo and video sharing service owned by Facebook, which recently took away the eggplant or aubergine emoji as a result of its innuendo to the male organ, conducted a probe and found that the tiny colorful symbols are taking over the web slang like xoxo, lol, mwah and other such now-old school acronyms.
A report on The Register notes that Instagram recently made it possible for users to post with hashtagged emojis.
Instagram’s little research revealed that traditional Internet slang which includes acronyms like LOL(laugh out loud), were as common as emoji in July 2012, but its usage has gone down by about 25 per cent.
Recent Instagram accounts were found to be using slang in under 5 per cent of posts, but used emojis in nearly half of their posts. The analysis also suggests that Emoji are growing fast, and that before long they'll be present in over half of posts to the service.
Till the last year, emojis were only white skinned until Apple introduced racially diverse emojis much to the discomfort of some analysts who called them racist, because the yellow was too yellow and the brown was too black.
In a first, Microsoft is injecting its emoji keyboard for the upcoming Windows 10 with a controversial ‘middle finger’ emoji. This too will be available in a variety of skin tones.
Call it the colonization of the words or the mere convenience of expressing emotions; emojis are here and not going to fade away soon. Our take - :/ (The ‘meh’ emoji)
