Starting September 19, the British capital moves to the beat of design and creation. Here is a review of the some of the most anticipated exhibits that are on display during the London Design Festival, running through September 27.
1. "Re-inventing Shoes," in the United Nude boutique at 13 Floral St, London
United Nude, the eccentric shoe brand known for its collaborations with fashion designer Iris Van Herpen, will present "Re-Inventing Shoes", a project that was also on display at the last Milan Furniture Fair. The project showcases the half shoe, half sculpture creations of five renowned architects and designers as they explore and play with 3D-printing. The chosen five are Zaha Hadid, Ben van Berkel of Unstudio, Fernando Romero, Ross Lovegrove and Michael Young.
2. "Robin Day Works in Wood," at the Victoria & Albert Museum
A key figure of design in the 20th century, Robin Day is the inventor and creator of the famed polypropylene stacking chair. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, the Victoria & Albert Museum will showcase a lesser-known aspect of his career, his work in wood. The exhibit will display pieces that were designed for his family home as well as documents that reveal his attachment to nature and his environmental concerns.
3. "Where is the Gold?" At the Royal College of Art
An object of desire for men since thousands of years, gold will be the focus of an exhibit at the Royal College of Art created by second year masters students in jewelry-making. The exhibit will emphasise the value of gold as a precious and idolised metal and display select pieces created by jewelers.
4. "Ladybird by Design," House of Illustration
A cultural British institution, the Ladybird Books are the focus of an exhibit at House of Illustration to celebrate 100 years of their existence. The exhibit will feature over 120 illustrations from classic and renowned Ladybird titles such as "People At Work", "Shopping With Mother" and "Key Words".
5. "Like Me: Our Bond with Brands" at the Design Museum
The Design Museum of London invites visitors to question the phenomenon of brands, their pervasiveness, their logo and their power. The exhibit explores everything from Starbucks and "The Hunger Games" to the brand-led lyrics of Jay Z. The neighboring display celebrating 50 years of British road signs is also worth a tour.
