South Korean vlogger Kelly, who is currently in India, faced harassment in Pune, Maharashtra, while filming a video with locals. The distressing incident occurred when Kelly was talking with market vendors and casually sipping coconut water. Abruptly, a man approached her and placed his hand around her neck while another man stood next to her. He can be heard saying, “Don’t stand so far. Hold her like this," which made her feel uncomfortable. Despite her attempts to distance herself, Kelly looked visibly distressed and decided to leave from the location, saying, “I have to run from here. They really like to hug, I don’t know why."
Ever since the video circulated online, it has sparked many to raise concerns regarding safety and respect for content creators in public spaces. Despite the crazy experience, she could be heard saying, “Wherever you travel, you can meet bad people. This is everywhere. So, I wanna say, please don’t judge every Indian. In my experience, India is such a good place to trip." However, the police have yet to respond to the video. In contrast, social media users felt regret and apologised to Kelly in her YouTube comments section, expressing hope that such incidents wouldn’t ruin her future journey.
Reacting to the video, a user wrote, “As an Indian citizen I apologise you Kelly for that rascal, who behaved with you in that way."
Another suggested, “Don’t let strangers touch you or hug you Kelly, stay healthy & safety."
“As an Indian we’re really sorry for his behaviour," a comment read.
An individual shared, “As a Indian, I will tell you India is wonderful country but same as other country we have good and bad people. Don’t let any strangers take advantage of your friendliness, be it in India or anywhere else in the world. Know the difference between good and bad touch. You can understand the person by observing the way they talk."
A user wrote, “Be safe Kelly most of the people are good in India they will help you for sure but not every person is good."
A similar incident happened last year, when two men were caught by police for harassing a South Korean woman while she was live-streaming. A video circulated online showed one of the accused forcibly dragging the YouTuber by her hand while she repeatedly shouted “no, no." The disturbing event happened in Mumbai. As she attempted to distance herself, the man returned with another individual on a bike, offering her a ride, which she declined, mentioning her home is nearby.
