With at least 47 deaths so far, the Madhya Pradesh Vyapam scam has emerged as the deadliest scam in the Indian history. From the death of the son of Governor Ram Naresh Yadav to the sudden demise of journalist Akshay Singh, the scam has often grabbed headlines for alleged mysterious deaths. But what's the scam all about?
Here are 10 points that explain the murky scam and the probe into it:
1. Vyapam stands for Vyavsayik Pareeksha Mandal, also known as Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board.
2. Scam dates back to 2007, but came to light at least four years later.
3. Alleged financial and administrative irregularities were first found by the Madhya Pradesh Local Fund Audit office.
4. Irregularities included unauthorised disposal of application forms worth crores of rupees.
5. MPPEB officials allegedly rigged eligibility tests for courses and recruitments, including medical entrance tests and government employment. Several aspirants for government employment as police constables, teachers, banking officials etc are believed to have been beneficiaries of this scam.
6. It is believed that bribe amounting to over Rs 2000 crore was exchanged.
7. While 2000 people have been arrested, search is on for 700 others.
8. At least 12 people linked to Vyapam died due to alleged illness, while as many as 10 people lost their lives in road accidents. At least three others are believed to have committed suicide.
9. Madhya Pradesh government initially formed SIT for investigation in 2012. Another SIT was constituted for probe by the Madhya Pradesh High Court in November 2014.
10. Of the 47 Vyapam-linked deaths, the first took place on November 21, 2009 when Vikas Singh Thakur, an alleged middleman, died due to illness and adverse drug reaction.
