Mumbai: BJP member Varun Gandhi, whom Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray had backed over his alleged hate speeches and described him as "the one Gandhi we like", has thanked the latter for the support.
"I am overwhelmed by his support. I am grateful to him and thank him," party mouthpiece Saamana quoted Varun as saying.
The Sena chief had found "nothing wrong" with the controversial anti-Muslim remarks of the BJP leader.
"There is nothing wrong in what he has said. He is one Gandhi we like," Thackeray had said in an editorial in the newspaper, of which he is the editor.
"There is no need for Varun to apologise for his remarks," the editorial had said, adding "Varun has spoken out the truth."
The 29-year-old politician is in the eye of a storm over his alleged anti-Muslim speeches at election rallies in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. Varun has denied making the remarks and claimed that the CD of his speeches had been doctored.
