Lucknow: Mayawati's birthday saw sycophancy touch a new high.
Picture this: A state DGP, in uniform, bending before his master. Clearly, the bureaucracy is keeping the politician well-fed. But this has raised serious questions of political morality.
“The way the IAS and IPS were putting themselves forward on the birthday (Mayawati’s), it was not right,” said Congress Spokesperson, Veerendra Madan.
Interestingly, Mayawati’s nemesis Mulayam Singh had faced similar charges when he was the CM. The then DGP, Bua Singh, was sacked for attending a Samajwadi Party conclave.
Mayawati, on the other hand, heads a full majority government so she may well feel there is nothing wrong in flaunting her domination over the entire bureaucracy. After all, it’s not for nothing that she is known as ‘Iron Lady’.
On their part, meanwhile, the bureaucrats must obey or else risk being transferred, even while her chief detractor Mulayam wonders, "How can you satisfy her? She is always hungry."
It seems that most bureaucrats end up serving not their country but their political masters.
