Mumbai: The Shiv Sena retained power in the 228-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai, as its candidate Shraddha Jadhav was elected Mayor on Tuesday.
Jadhav bagged 114 votes, while her nearest rival Congress candidate Pricilla Kadam got 95 votes.
Jadhav, a commerce graduate, was elected corporator from Parel as an Independent candidate in 1992 before she joined the Sena.
She will replace Shubha Raul also from the Sena as the city Mayor.
In the mayoral election, Samajwadi Party did not participate while Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) also abstained from voting, citing party function at Shanmukhanad hall as reason.
The Sena has been ruling the BMC for past 15 years. This is the second time when the Mayor was elected by raising of hands and not through secret ballots.
Meanwhile, Sena's Versova corporator Chaya Bhanji (45), who had gone missing for the past 48 hours, appeared for the election at the BMC headqurters.
Bhanji's son had registered a missing complaint at the Versova police station on Sunday night after the corporator did not return home.
In the house of 228, the Sena has 81 corporators, BJP 29, Akhil Bharatiya Sena two and three Independents. The Congress has 77, NCP 14, Samajwadi Party seven and RPI three.
