Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Spokesperson Ram Madhav has spoken out against the bizarre order in Rajasthan which stated that sportsmen who had any affiliation or links with the RSS or the Jamaat-e-Islami, would be disqualified from receiving any state government awards. Madhav called the practice 'illegal' on social networking site Twitter and said that officials responsible for the order should be sacked.
He wrote, "Rajasthan government asking for affidavit of no RSS connection for sports awards in illegal. Officials responsible for the order should be sacked."
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took his fight with the RSS to a new level by making top sportspersons sign affidavits saying they had nothing to do with the RSS, before giving them awards. Weightlifter Vishal Singh was awarded Rs 2 lakh at the Rajasthan government's sports awards function after winning a state gold medal. But before his moment of glory, he was made to sign an undertaking that says he has nothing to do with the RSS or Jamaat-e-Islami.
"They made me sign an affidavit that said that I didn't have any connections with the RSS or Jamaat-e-Islami. They said that if I didn't, I wouldn't get the money," Vishal Singh said.
While the sportspersons and coaches find the affidavit shocking, the Rajasthan Sports Council says it was only following Gehlot government's orders. "We as an organisation merely follow orders and directives," said Shivcharan Mali, Chairperson, State Sports Council, Jaipur.
