Malladi Krishna Rao had written to Sonia Gandhi on January 28 about not contesting the polls.

Puducherry: A Congress Minister in Puducherry on Thursday said he would not contest the April 13 assembly polls and has also decided to retire from active politics.

Talking to PTI here, Malladi Krishna Rao who represents the lone segment of Yanam, an enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh, said he had written to AICC leader Sonia Gandhi on January 28 about not contesting the polls and withdrawing from politics.

He had also informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of his decision. I will however continue to be a Congress member and will not switch my loyalty to any other party," he said.

Rao said he had not not submitted application to the PCC leader to seek party ticket to contest the polls in Yanam. Rao, who was first elected to the territorial assembly from Yanam as an Independent in 1996, has been holding the seat since then.
