United Nations: Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday said that delivering on the ambitious post-2015 developmental agenda would require "unwavering political will" at the national and international level and there is a need to address the "structural constraints."
Addressing the UN Sustainable Development Summit, Sharif said the 2030 development agenda is "our collective response" to challenges of poverty, inequality and lack of opportunity that continue to remain the "stark realities of our time."
Sharif, who met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon before his address in the General Assembly hall, said the scope and magnitude of the new development framework is "enormous" and "delivering on it will require unwavering political will at the national and international levels."
The implementation of the agenda also requires a "paradigm shift in our political, social and economic developmental outlook," he said, adding that addressing "systematic issues and structural constraints would be equally important."
The 17 SDGs and 169 targets chart a developmental centric and growth oriented pathway and the focus is on "transforming our economies and livelihood, building cohesive just and peaceful societies and protecting our planet." He added that poverty eradication remains at the core of the development agenda.
The Pakistan Prime Minister said his country's personal experience states that strong and sustained economic growth has to be at the heart of any effort to achieve these goals and meaningful implementation of the agenda also demands matching resources.
"Development strategies remain first and foremost national undertakings. For Pakistan, the SDGs complement our own developmental needs and priorities." Outlining steps taken by the government, he said Pakistan has initiated reforms to stem capital outflows.
On climate change, he said nations have an historic opportunity to reverse the "threatening tide of climate change" and "we must negotiate an outcome in Paris that is fair, equitable and guided" by the principle of the UN Convention on Climate Change.
He also encouraged Pakistan to continue engaging Afghanistan in order to help stabilise the country. The two leaders also discussed fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
On Myanmar, the Secretary-General underlined the need for fair and inclusive treatment of the Rohingya people. The Secretary-General emphasised the importance of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at the national level.
