New Delhi: Union Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran was 'holidaying' at Udhagamandalam when the key decision-making panel of the DMK decided to withdraw him from the Union Cabinet on Sunday evening.

The party decided to withdraw Maran from the Union Cabinet for violating party discipline and bringing defame to it by bringing out a family feud between the Karunanidhis and the Marans out in the open.

Karunanidhi is understood to have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging him to drop Maran from the Cabinet.

Maran, the 41-year-old son of late Murasoli Maran and Karunanidhi's nephew, was brought into the party just ahead of the 2004 Lok Sabha elections after his father's death in late 2003.

He contested successfully from Central Madras Lok Sabha seat and was made a Cabinet minister straight being given a plum portfolio.

He functioned as the DMK's pointsperson at the Centre and interacted with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on behalf of Karunanidhi.

Maran was not immediately available for comments on the decision taken by his party to get him removed from the Cabinet.

Maran arrived at Udhagamandalam, about 90 km from Coimbatore, on a "holiday" with his family on Saturday afternoon and is staying at a private bungalow.

Mediapersons have been waiting for long before the gates of the bungalow to get Maran's reaction, police said.
