Maheshtala: West Bengal Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee on Thursday blamed the opposition parties for creating violence in the peaceful state. "The opposition leaders have no work now as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has restored peace in Jangalmahal and the Darjeeling Hills. So they are now trying to trigger new violence," he said after visiting the site of an inferno at Santoshpur in South 24 Parganas district that claimed the life of a child and gutted 700 huts in a slum in Maheshtala on Tuesday.

He said Trinamool Congress was against taking away land without rehabilitating the displaced. "This is the order of the chief minister. We have always fought against displacement – in Singur and in Nandigram," he said adding the TMC government had paid compensation of Rs two lakh in August this year to each of families affected by the December 2010 fire at the same place.

The incident, which had claimed four lives, had occured during the rule of the erstwhile Left Front government but it had not paid any compensation. Chatterjee said orders had been given to arrest the prime suspect of Tuesday's fire at the earliest.

He said a total 1184 poor families to be rehabilitated in appartments to be built by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority at Maheshtala at a cost of Rs 60 crore. While each family was required to pay Rs 54000 for the purpose, the local civic body had arranged bank loans for them.
