Nagaland polls: DAN stakes claim to form government
Nagaland polls: DAN stakes claim to form government
Results of three seats have not been declared so far.

New Delhi: The key UPA ally Sharad Pawar's NCP is in no mood to break away from the democratic alliance of Nagaland.

The Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN), of which the BJP, NCP and JDU are all members, is the main Opposition bloc to the Congress and hopes to form the next government with the help of independents.

The DAN is just two seats short of a simple majority. The Congress on the other hand has won 22 seats 9 short of the 31 it needs to stake claim.

Members of the Nagaland Peoples Front (NPF), major ally of DAN, said that at least five Independent candidates have already confirmed their support to the DAN.

Results of three seats have not been declared so far.

The NPF leaders also claimed that the alliance is expected to win rest of the three seats, results of which are likely to be declared on Sunday

The DAN has 29 members in the 60-member House, with 25 from the NPF and two each from the BJP and NCP, who had pre-poll alliance. There are six Independent Members elected to the House.

Congress will need to win those and get some of those six independents on its side if it is stake claim.

Even though the Congress has no pre-poll alliance with any party, Congress Legislature Party leader I Imkong on Thursday had expressed his willingness to take any like-minded party to form the government.

All eyes are now on Governor K Shankaranarayanan to see who he will invite to form the government.
