Lucknow: In a major setback for Congress in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari on Saturday rejected their Muslim sub-quota of 4.5 per cent and supported the Samajwadi Party for the upcoming polls in the state.
"I don't agree with 4.5 per cent reservation formula of Congress, it will only create further misunderstandings. Muslims should get reservation on the basis of population," Bukhari said.
Bukhari, who shared the dais with Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday, said that Muslims should get reservation on the basis of population.
Bukhari further said, "SP came up openly and apologised and we have to now move on from that. We have no complaints against Samajwadi party and I hope the Muslims of Uttar Pradesh also forget about the matter and move on."
Speaking at the press conference Mulayam Singh Yadav said that he respects and support Bukhari.
He further said that his party supported Congress because it did not want to support LK Advani.
