Karnataka: BJP Leader Eshwarappa's Caste Comment Against Rahul Gandhi Triggers Controversy
Former Karnataka deputy CM KS Eshwarappa was taking a dig at senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his recent comments over PM Narendra Modi’s caste

Senior BJP leader KS Eshwarappa’s “mixed breed” remark against Rahul Gandhi has stoked a fresh controversy in Congress-ruled Karnataka. The former deputy chief minister was taking a dig at the Congress leader’s recent comments over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s caste, and said people refer to the Gandhi family as “casteless”, “mixed caste” and “mixed breed”.

In Odisha during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Gandhi had alleged that the prime minister has been lying about his caste, and that he belongs to the general category and not the other backward classes (OBC). “PM Modi was not born in the OBC category. He was born in the Teli caste in Gujarat,” he had said, adding that the community was given the OBC tag by the BJP in 2000.

Addressing media persons in Karnataka’s Shivamogga, Eshwarappa asked them which caste Rahul Gandhi belongs to, adding that when the question of his caste comes up, people say his family is “casteless, of a mixed caste while some even call it a mixed breed family”. He added that these were not his words but the public’s.

The Congress condemned the remark and called Eshwarappa a “habitual offender”. “Eshwarappa is a habitual offender, he has no control over his tongue or mind…” said Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad.

Eshwarappa is known to make headlines with his controversial remarks and communal statements, and has been booked a number of times for this. He recently made a controversial statement that leaders like Congress MP DK Suresh who demand a separate nation for the southern states should be shot dead. Following this, an FIR was filed against the BJP leader.
