Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, charged with denigrating Dalits after a speech last Wednesday, was released from jail in Moradabad on Saturday after beinjg granted interim bail.
As she came out of jail, Joshi described the charges against her as "disproportionate and illegal" and asserted to waiting reporters that she was "ready to go to jail a 100 times and I will continue to fight for the poor, downtrodden and women's rights".
She also said that Chief Minister Mayawati, who had got Joshi arrested for her remarks, should resign on "moral grounds at the earliest".
Joshi was arrested after midnight Wednesday night under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for her remark. She has now been given bail till July 29.
Joshi's home in Lucknow was attacked and torched by supporters of the state's ruling Bahujan Samaj Party around the time she was arrested.
Meanwhile Congress, General Secretary Digvijay Singh has asked for a CBI inquiry into the case.
He said, "We have no hope of an honest enquiry...Cong demands a CBI inquiry and till its ordered we will agitate.
