New Delhi: The Janata Dal United has now openly challenged its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party following the wrangling over the prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
JDU General Secretary Shivanand Tiwari in a strongly worded comment said that his party was not bending before the BJP for support. Tiwari said that that the BJP has always known the party's views on the PM candidate and it was surprising as to why its leaders were now making so much noise.
He added that the BJP must keep in mind that the JDU joined hands with it when the party was a political untouchable and also said that BJP leaders should respect the views of its allies.
Interestingly, BJP has tried to send out a strong message to the JDU after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar rasing a red flag over the party projecting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate. BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi also come out against Kumar on Tuesday and called his statements "unfortunate".
Earlier, Nitish Kumar said that even though he was the railway minister when the Sabarmati Express train was burnt at Godhra station, he could not be held responsible as maintenance of law and order was the state government's responsibility. BJP spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said that Nitish Kumar statement was aimed at Lalu Prasad and not Narendra Modi.
