New Delhi: Actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan on Saturday filed her nomination for the Rajya Sabha as a Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate. A former Rajya Sabha member, Jaya filed her nomination in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and other party MLAs.
Jaya was earlier elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004 as SP nominee and completed her term in 2010. She, however, refused re-nomination.
She is the sixth Samajwadi Party nominee to file her nomination for the Upper House. Naresh Agarwal, Kiranmay Nanda, Darshan Singh Yadav, Brijbhushan Tiwari and Munawwar Saleem had yesterday filed their nominations.
In proportion to the party position in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Samajwadi Party (SP) will have a quota of 6 of the 10 member limit set for UP.
As many as 58 seats are set to fall vacant in Rajya Sabha on April 2, 2012. On the basis of the strength of the state assembly, the state is entitled to send 10 members.
Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the youngest-ever to hold the office. Nineteen ministers of Cabinet rank were also administered oath besides 29 ministers of state.
