Kolkata: Two days after Presidency University was vandalised by alleged Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers, West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan addressed students at the campus and started by apologising for the incident. Meanwhile, five people, including Shubhojeet Burman, whose mother has admitted he is a Trinamool student wing member, have been arrested.
"I have failed you as a Governor, I have failed you as a chancellor. There are others who have failed you as well," an emotional Narayanan said. A day after hundreds of students, faculty members and alumni marched to Raj Bhavan and asked for his intervention, the Governor of West Bengal promised them safety and protection.
"As a chancellor, I was moved but as a Governor he failed us," said Sutanuka Bhattacharya, a student. "I expected him to say some more about the government and inaction. He was politically correct," said another student, Satyaki Majumdar.
The Governor did stop short of blaming any particular outfit, saying a police probe is on. The TMC still remained in denial despite pictures showing the party's leaders outside the Presidency University's gates on Wednesday, just before the campus was vandalised. Partha Basu, TMC Councillor, also said he will resign if any footage shows him inside the campus.
The five who were arrested were produced in court, four of whom were remanded in judicial custody till April 26. Burman's mother has even alleged the party lured her son within its fold by promising a government job.
"My son is a TMC member. He told me that if he continues to work for the party he will get a government job," Ilabati Burman, mother of Subhajit Burman said. The TMC has filed a counter complaint against two students - one former and one current of Presidency University, alleging provocation by pelting stones, which lead them to come to the gates but they maintain no one entered the campus. The students have now been granted bail.
