Goa: BJP-MGP combine stakes claim to form govt
BJP leader Manohar Parrikar is all set to become the chief minister of the coastal state for the third time.

Panaji: The BJP-MGP combine on Wednesday staked claim to form the government in Goa claiming support of 26 legislators as senior BJP leader Manohar Parrikar is all set to become the chief minister of the coastal state for the third time.

Parrikar, who was unanimously elected as the leader of the state BJP legislature party, submitted a letter of support signed by the newly-elected MLAs to Governor K Sankarnarayanan.

The letter claims support of 21 legislators from BJP, three from its alliance partner Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and two Independents--Benjamin Silva (Velim) and Avertano Furtado (Navelim).

However, there is no formal communication from Raj Bhavan about the swearing-in.

The ruling Congress was relegated to nine seats while its alliance partner NCP drew a blank in the March 3 Assembly polls, counting for which was held on Thursday.

Senior BJP leaders Venkaiah Naidu and Ravi Shankar Prasad are overseeing the process of government formation.

Earlier, BJP legislature wing which met at a city hotel here first time since the results were out and passed a joint resolution electing Parrikar as their leader.

Meanwhile, regional outfit Goa Vikas Party led by former minister Fransisco Miccky Pacheco has also extended its "unconditional" support to the government to be led by Parrikar.

GVP General Secretary Lyndon Monteiro said both the legislators of the party from Nuvem and Benaulim seats are extending their support.
