New Delhi: Just ahead of the crucial monsoon session of Parliament, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has expressed her desire to speak on the Lalit Modi controversy.
The government said if needed Swaraj would get a permission to speak in her defence.
But striking a defiant note, Congress refused to accept Swaraj's desire and said nothing short of her resignation was acceptable. "Sushma can speak, but larger issue of probity being scuttled. She is a cabinet minister and there is a code of conduct for her. She went above everybody," Congress leader Tom Vadakkan said.
Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara are embroiled in the controversy involving former Indian Premier League chief Lalit Modi. While Swaraj claimed to have cleared a no objection to Lalit Modi's request to travel out of UK, Raje allegedly helped him to get a UK stay permit.
With opposition upping the ante against the Modi government and demanding resignations of BJP leaders, the party is in a difficult situation.
