Chandigarh: The Election Commission on Saturday said it could consider advancing the counting of votes for Assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, originally scheduled for October 23, because of Diwali.
However, it said, the date of counting of votes in Arunachal Pradesh would remain unchanged.
Answering questions at a press conference here this evening, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Navin Chawla said "The Commission can consider the suggestion for preponing the date of counting in Haryana and Maharashtra earlier fixed for October 23."
Asked about the gap of 10 days between polling and counting in the two states as also Arunachal Pradesh, Chawla said the gap was due to logistical issues in the North-Eastern state where the polling parties would require a couple of days to return from the polling stations.
