New Delhi: Ghulam Nabi Azad, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, has called into question the termination of Rajya Sabha membership of former JD(U) President Sharad Yadav.
"I was present in the meeting which announced Nitish Kumar as the leader of Mahagathbandhan. Votes in Bihar elections were for the grand alliance. So if at all Nitish Kumar should resign and the membership of his supporters in the RS should be terminated," Azad said in the House.
Membership of Yadav along with that of another MP Ali Anwar was cancelled by RS chairman N Venkaiah Nadu earlier this month.
The two MPs had openly revolted against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's decision to leave the grand alliance in Bihar and join hands with the BJP.
Yadav was also the leader of JD(U) in the RS. Nitish Kumar has now appointed his close aide RCP Singh to that post.
Yadav's has challenged in the Delhi High Court the RS chairman's decision to terminate his membership of the house.
Earlier, the Election Commission had also turned down a plea by the Sharad Yadav group seeking the rights over JD(U) election symbol. The EC in its order last month allocated the symbol to Nitish Kumar who is now the President of the Party.
