After Jadavpur University, violence has crippled academic pursuits at yet another institution of repute in Kolkata. Chaos broke out at the 150-year-old Calcutta University's main campus on Wednesday when agitating teachers were roughed up by supporters of the student wing of the Trinamool Congress.
The violent scenes at the Calcutta University's main campus right outside the vice chancellor's chamber spoke volumes about the anarchy which currently prevails in the sector.
Violence erupted at the campus on Wednesday when supporters of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the students' wing of the Bengal's ruling party, barged into the campus and allegedly roughed up teachers who were demonstrating against certain administrative decisions of the authorities.
The allegations were, however, summarily denied by Trinamool Chhatra Parishad supporters, who were allegedly outsiders to the campus and who could be heard issuing veiled threats to the teachers in their political slogans.
The teachers' protests, which had been taking place for the past few days, were sparked off by the university's recent decision to suspend its finance officer on charges of financial irregularity and the move to abolish that post altogether.
While teachers claimed that the charges were false, they view these moves as an attempt by the Trinamool Congress-run state government to gain direct control of the institution's funds and resources, and jeopardise its autonomy.
The hands-tied position of the university authorities is making matters worse than it already is in this strife-torn campus. It now boils down to the Trinamool Congress government on whether it would allow the vice chancellor to act independently to restore academic and administrative order at the heritage university.
