New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday finalised a list of 70 candidates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The names of the candidates were decided after a meeting at 10 Janpath attended by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and All India Congress Committee in-charge of Bihar, Mukul Wasnik.
The names of the candidates will be released later. The party is going to fight alone in the all the 243 seats.
The party's screening committee meeting spanned over almost a week starting from September 14 and held detailed deliberations on every seat as there were at least 10 serious contenders for each of the seats.
Bihar Pradesh Election Committee of the party had earlier sent its list to the AICC after a two-day meeting in Patna over a week back.
Sources said the party will focus on giving tickets to youths and accommodating all sections of society apart from the winnability criteria as Congress has no particular caste or community orientation in the state unlike other parties.
The other leaders who attended the meeting included Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister AK Antony, Sonia's political secretary Ahmed Patel, and AICC General Secretary BK Hariprasad.
Bihar will have a six-phase polling starting October 21 when voting will be held for 47 seats. The second phase will be held on October 24 in 45 seats. The third phase will be on October 28 for 48 seats, fourth on November one (42), fifth on November 9 (35) and last on November 20 (26 seats).
