This General Assembly constituency has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 22.65% and an estimated Scheduled Tribe population of 0.01%, according to the report of the Delimitation Commission, 2008. In 2012, Dr Sangram Yadav of SP emerged victorious in this seat beating Surendra Prasad Mishra of BSP by a margin of 43,620 votes which was 23.4% of the total votes polled in the constituency. SP had a vote share of 52.3% in the seat.
