New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday reacted sharply to the call by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare's call to campaign against Congress in the upcoming assembly elections.
Reacting to the statement by Anna that he would tour the poll-bound states and ask people to not vote for Congress if Jan Lokpal was not passed, Union Minister Salman Khurshid said that party would just perform its duty and go back to the people to let them judge its performance.
"I will not comment of anybody's view on what will happen in next elections. Every citizen is free to vote for anybody. Congress will only perform its duty and will go back to people. It will let the people judge the party's performance," said Khurshid.
Talking about the introduction of the Jan Lokpal Bill in parliament, Khurshid said that the government would bring not only this, but other bill as well. However, he added that the government would need the support of the Opposition.
Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi termed the election card played by the veteran Gandhian as unfortunate and political.
Referring to the decision by Anna to oppose the Congress in Hisar bypolls, he said that Anna was not waiting even till the winter session.
"What Anna ji is saying is unfortunate. He is saying he will oppose Congress in Hisar bypolls. He is not waiting even for the winter session while the government is trying to pass the bill then," said Alvi.
However, he asserted that the move would have no impact on the poll prospects of the party.
"BJP, RSS, Shiv Sena are already opposing Congress. It will not affect much even if Anna does so. Anna’s statement is a political one," he said.
Meanwhile, the BJP expressed happiness over Anna appreciating the fact that the party supported the Jan Lokpal Bill.
"When Team Anna met us, we said that we all are in support of Jan Lokpal Bill. We are happy to say that Anna ji also appreciated it," said BJP leader Balbir Punj.
He further said that the approach of the Congress in dealing with Anna and Baba Ramdev was dishonest.
"This has to be seen as dishonest dealing which the Congress leadership and government did first with Baba Ramdev and then with Anna Hazare," he said.
