New Delhi: BJP President Amit Shah met Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley at his residence on Saturday evening to finalise the next party chief for Punjab and also to discuss the strategy for the upcoming state Assembly election in 2017.
Present incumbent Kamal Sharma who is the strong contender to lead the party in Punjab was also present in the meeting.
The other senior party leaders who were present Jaitley's residence are: Party's National General Secretary (Organisation) Ram Lal, two former party presidents of Punjab Ashwani Sharma and Avinash Rai Khanna.
Party insiders said, both Ashwani Sharma and Avinash Rai Khanna are also in the race for the next state president.
Shah discussed reasons behind the poll defeat in Delhi and in Bihar. He also urged the leaders not any mistakes or objectionable comment, which will go against the party in Punjab.
Recently, the BJP has reached out to cricketer-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu to get him on board for the electoral strategy.
Sidhu distanced himself from the state politics ever since he was replaced with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as the candidate to contest 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar.
Also, Sidhu is not having good equations with Akali Dal's top leadership in Punjab and this is another reason behind his disassociation with the state politics. He wants BJP to 'break alliance' with the Akalis.
Sensing new political equation due to Sidhu, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal (Akali Dal) also met Shah to decide future course of action in the state.
Sidhu was reportedly not present in the meeting.
Shah is working hard to bring all dissidents on board to form the next government in Punjab.
