New Delhi: Hashmat Ali, who was taken into custody on Thursday from Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh's house for allegedly trying to blackmail him, told the police in a written complaint that he was kidnapped and taken to Singh's house.
Ali, in his complaint to Delhi Police's Crime Branch, said Singh's secretary Tarun and one other person kidnapped him in the morning while he was standing at a tobacco shop in south Delhi's Khan market.
He said they took him in a car to Singh's residence. After some time, the station house officer of the Tughlaq Road police station detained him from the house. He was later handed over to Crime Branch sleuths.
A senior Crime Branch officer, pleading anonymity, that Ali has given them such a complaint.
"We are also looking into allegations made by Ali. Complaint made by Amar Singh's secretary is also under examination. We would only register a case if we find any of the allegations to be true," the officer said.
The police officer said it was very unlikely that they would register any case against Ali.
"The written complaint forwarded to us nowhere states that Ali was demanding Rs.500 million from Amar Singh. Technically speaking there is no case in it," the officer explained.
Singh alleged Ali was blackmailing him. He claimed that Ali came to his residence Thursday morning demanding Rs.500 million to make a statement in his favour before the privileges committee of parliament probing the cash-for-vote scam.
The police said, Ali was likely to be let off later in the evening and would be asked to join investigations Friday.
