'Years Later we Realised': Rachin Ravindra's Father Reveals Son Not Named After Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid
New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra has hit the headlines thanks to his surreal run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Rachin Ravindra has been the breakout star for New Zealand cricket team in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. The allrounder has been in terrific form in what is his maiden appearance in the competition, peeling off three centuries and playing a vital role in the team’s run to the semi-finals.

One of the most talked about story is how Ravindra’s name is a portmanteau of India batting legends Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. The youngster himself revealed how his name came to be during a chat with the official broadcaster of the world cup.

However Ravindra’s father, who migrated to New Zealand from Bengaluru, has the name was suggested by his wife and it was years later that they realised it was a mixture of Sachin and Rahul, alluding it wasn’t a deliberate portmanteau.

“When Rachin was born, my wife suggested the name, and we didn’t spend a lot of time discussing it,” Ravi Krishnamurthy, Ravindra’s father, told The Print.

“The name sounded good, was easy to spell, and short, so we decided to go with it. It was only some years later that we realised the name was a mix of Rahul and Sachin’s names. He wasn’t named with the intention to make our child a cricketer or anything of the sort,” he added.

Krishnamurthy himself used to play cricket and says he gave his children the freedom to purse any field they chose to.

“As parents, our hopes for our children extend to any field they choose to pursue. When Rachin expressed an interest in cricket, we supported him wholeheartedly and hoped he would excel in it, just as we would for our daughter in her chosen path,” Krishnamurthy said.

He may not have originally been named after Tendulkar and Dravid but Ravindra has already broken a couple of the former’s records – player with most world cup runs and centuries before turning 25.

Currently, he’s racked up 565 runs and is third on the list of top run-getters behind India’s Virat Kohli and South African Quinton de Kock.
