Australia are always the favourites when it comes to the ICC ODI World Cups. The 5-time champions may not have had a great start to their campaign but they bounced back and rediscovered their lost mojo as a team. On Wednesday, they showcased their best performance across departments to thump the Netherlands by a massive margin on 309 runs.
After David Warner’s 22nd ODI hundred, Glenn Maxwell smashed the fastest World Cup hundred – off just 40 balls – and shattered the recently set record by South Africa’s Aiden Markram at the same venue, the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In addition, notable contributions from Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschagne (62) powered Australia to a colossal total of 399 runs. Later, Adam Zampa starred with a 4-wicket haul in the second innings while Mitch Marsh bagged a couple of wickets to bundle out the Dutchmen for 90 in just 21 overs.

The remarkable win let the Australians script a number of records in the fifty-over format. Let’s have a look at them:
Warner equals Sachin Tendulkar’s record
The century at Kotla on Wednesday evening was David Warner’s sixth in the ODI World Cups, matching the record of Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar. His 104-run knock off 93 balls was comprised of 11 fours and three sixes. The Australian opening batter is just one hundred away from equalling Rohit Sharma’s tally of 7 tons in World Cups.
Maxwell scripts World Cup history
Glenn Maxwell, who said he didn’t want to come out to bat, went all guns blazing at the Arun Jaitley Stadium and smashed a 40-ball hundred to script an all-time World Cup record – the fastest ton. He bettered Aiden Markram’s record of a 49-ball century which came against Sri Lanka in what was the first game hosted by Delhi in the ongoing tournament.
Twin centuries for Australia, again!
The Aussie innings featured two centuries, something that happened for the second time in the history of World Cup cricket. Australia achieved the special feat for the first time in its previous outing against Pakistan.
Bowlers with the most dismissals in World Cups
Mitchell Starc, who returned 1/22, equalled Lasith Malinga’s tally of 56 wickets in ODI World Cups, becoming the third-highest wicket-taker. While the Sri Lankan legends achieved the feat in 29 games, Starc had it in just 23. Former Australia speedster Glenn McGrath tops the list with 71 scalps in 39 games, followed by Muttiah Muralitharan (68 wickets in 40 games). Meanwhile, Starc also matched Wasim Akram’s feat of most bowled dismissals in World Cups – 25.
Biggest Win in ODIs
The 309-run win is now the second-biggest win registered by a team in the ODIs. India’s 317-run victory over Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram earlier this year tops the list.
