News18 ‘Scholarship Guide’ brings the best and most prestigious grants for Indian students to study abroad, with most of them covering flight tickets, accommodation and course fee; and some also providing stipend.
Computer science is one of the most sought-after courses for students in India as well as abroad. No wonder, India is starting their off-shore campuses abroad with special focus on Artificial Intelligence and computer science courses.
“Scholarships are highly competitive and require careful preparation. It’s important to ensure you stand out from the crowd as a strong candidate. Each scholarship application will need to be tailored against the requirements set out by the scholarship provider,” said Joel Frisch, Vice-President, Global Acquisition.
Frisch suggests students start early, build a checklist for documents, craft a strong personal statement and aim to submit everything within the deadline.

Albert Einstein International Scholarship Test
The All-India Council for Technical Skill Development (AICTSD) offers Albert Einstein International Scholarships to allow Indian students to pursue their higher education abroad. Students from different schools and colleges can apply and those who clear the exam will be connected to the researchers or experts for further training. The winners will get free training as well as a cash prize.
Who can apply: Applicant must be between 10 and 24 years of age. Different age groups have different application forms and exams.
Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to clear the MCQ-based exam. The exam also has negative marks for wrong answers. After clearing the exam, students will be called for an interview.

Microsoft scholarship programme
Microsoft offers a range of scholarships to hundreds of international students pursuing computer science of STEM-related courses in US or Canada-based institutes. This is open to international students.
Who can apply: Students pursuing computer science or STEM-related courses in US or Canada-based colleges and with a GPA of 4 out of 5 or 3 out of 4 or equivalent can apply.
Selection Procedure: This is a merit-based scholarship. Students will have to submit academic and financial documents; after the profile review, scholarship will be granted.
Microsoft also offers scholarships up to USD 5,000, as a one-time or renewable payment for up to four years. This is granted to women to pursue a career in STEM or computer science. This scholarship is also open to students from socially or economically backward or under-represented communities.

Royal Holloway Computer Science Scholarship
Royal Holloway University of London offers postgraduate scholarships to international students interested in computer science or allied fields. The scholarship offers a £2,000 rebate in the course fee, however, for Indian nationals, the scholarship is doubled to £4,000.
Who can apply: Students who wish to pursue a master’s course in computer science or allied fields including applied data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence can apply.
Selection Procedure: Students who meet other admission criteria and apply for admission are automatically considered for the scholarship.

Generation Google Scholarship
Google offers scholarships worth $2,500 to students from Asia-Pacific region, including India, to study computer science. This scholarship encourages female students to apply.
Who can apply: Students with strong academic skills and willing to study computer science or computer engineering and hailing from the APAC region can apply. Students must have obtained a full-time bachelor’s degree.
Selection Procedure: Candidates will have to submit an essay to answer a question. They also need to submit academic records. Students’ profiles including resume and background verification will be done.

Paul Thistlewaite Memorial Honours Year Scholarship
The Australian National University (ANU) offers students scholarships worth AUD 5,000 per annum to pursue a degree at its College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics.
Who can apply: Both domestic and international students willing to study computing, advanced computing, or BE in software engineering can apply. Preference is given to female candidates to support gender equity within the field.
Selection Procedure: Candidates will be shortlisted based on academic merit. Preference will be given to students undertaking Honours in the area of Advanced Information Systems or Human Centered Computing including Big Data and Machine Learning.

Centre of Computer Science and Engineering Junior Research Fellowship
This is offered by most IITs to help students at graduate as well as postgraduate levels to pursue research fellowships in computer science or allied fields. Selected candidates will also get monthly stipends.
Who can apply: Candidate should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field. Candidates should not be over 28 years of age. If the applicant does not have a master’s degree, they will have to clear either GATE or NET exam.
Selection Procedure: Candidates with prior experience in analogue integrated circuit design/radio frequency, integrated circuit design will get preference. Each IIT can have a different selection criterion, candidates will have to check the official websites.

Beyond Scholarships
For students, who do not want to opt for the scholarship route, considering high competition, there are still many other options open.
Joel Frisch suggests students to “always start with the schools they are applying to as they may offer merit or need-based scholarships”.
Further options they can consider are “through government, banks and independent loan providers”.
“When reviewing funding options, it’s important for a student to consider a number of factors, such as loan repayment terms, the monthly cost of the loan and any fee associated with the loan. In addition, students should understand their own affordability post-programme in order to cover the monthly repayment costs. Each lender may use different calculations so be sure to use a uniform calculation like APR (Annual Percentage Rate) to understand the true annual cost of borrowing money,” suggests Frisch.
