Pat Cummins Confirms He'll Enter IPL Auction, Open to Extending Australia ODI Captaincy
Pat Cummins had pulled out of IPL 2023 to focus on international assignments.

Currently in India for the 2023 ODI World Cup, Australia ODI captain Pat Cummins says he wants to be in the best shape for the T20 World Cup next year and hence, will be available for the next IPL auction.

The players auction for the next season of IPL will be held on December 19 in Dubai.

Cummins, who was picked by two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders for a sum of Rs 7.5 crore in the 2022 auction, pulled out of the IPL season earlier this year to prioritise international commitments.

“I feel like I haven’t played a heap of T20 cricket and in some ways I feel like I haven’t played my best T20 cricket for a little while,” Cummins told reporters ahead of Australia’s world cup semi-final match against South Africa.

“I’m really excited, I’m probably going to go into the IPL auction for next year to try to get some games before that World Cup and push a case to not only make the side but get back to how I feel like I can bowl in T20 cricket,” he added.

Follow all the action from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 including the World Cup schedule, World Cup 2023 results, and ICC Cricket World Cup points table. Players are vying to top the World Cup 2023 Most Runs and World Cup 2023 Most Wickets charts.

Cummins was named Australia ODI skipper following the retirement of Aaron Finch last year and has guided the five-time winners into the world cup semis this time around on the back of seven consecutive wins.

He’s open to continuing into the role post world cup but says nothing is set in stone though.

“Potentially, yeah. We’ll chat about it. We’ve been pretty open, me and Andrew (McDonald) and George (Bailey) around different times in the year you’re going to have different priorities,” Cummins said.

“This is a bit of a one-off year where there’s three or four big off-season events. After here the focus shifts back to Test cricket for a fair while. Probably like we’ve done in the past, at times white-ball cricket is going to have to shift (as a priority) so we fully focus on Test cricket. There’s no end date in sight,” he added.

Australia and South Africa will meet in the second semi-final to be played at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Thursday.
