Pakistan Establishment Turns to ‘Siyasat Ka Sultan’ to Mend Ties with Taliban | Exclusive
Pakistan’s opposition leader Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman was sent to Kabul and later Kandahar to use his religious influence on the Kandahari group of the Taliban

The Pakistani establishment is leaning on opposition leader Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman to strike up a peace deal with the Taliban, sources have told CNN-News18. Famously known as “Siyasat ka Sultan” in Pakistan’s political landscape, Rehman is a supporter of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and has demanded its international recognition.

Pakistan sent Rehman to Kabul and later Kandahar to use his religious influence on the Kandahari group of the Taliban. It hopes to hasten the peace process and negotiate a deal to control the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to reports, Rehman met senior Afghan government officials and later supreme leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada.

But the Taliban regime is not convinced, said sources, and maintains that what Pakistan is demanding is “absolutely illogical”.

However, Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting minister of foreign affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, said he hopes that the visit of the delegation led by Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, leader of Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, will have a good impact on relations between the two countries.

According to sources, some headway has been made during talks between the leaders and details will be worked out by the executives of the governments from both sides.
